HOW DOES A GAS WATER HEATER WORK?
Gas water heaters work in a very similar way to electric water heaters, though the heating process is different. Gas water heaters use a gas-powered flame to send heat up a chimney-style element that is placed within the tank of water. This gas-powered flame is controlled by a gas regulator assembly which contains a thermostat to ensure the water is adequately heated. The process of heat rising, called convection, heats up the surrounding water quickly and efficiently. The hot water discharge pipe then distributes the hot water through the home when needed.

THE TANK
The tank itself also has numerous parts to ensure the unit is working effectively and efficiently. Generally speaking, the main tank is enclosed within a steel outer jacket to keep in the heat, and typically a plastic or glass layer on the inner tank. When a glass layer is used, a sacrificial anode is usually present, which is a magnesium or aluminum rod to draw ions into the water and away from the sides of the tank, preventing rusting. Between the jacket and inner tank, there is an insulation aspect that keeps in heat. The chimney-style element is an exhaust flue that allows exhaust gases to rise up through the tube, heating the water and removing any dangerous gases.

WHAT SIZE IS RIGHT FOR ME?
At Water Heater Man, we offer 40 gallons and 50-gallon gas water heaters. The size that you go with is ultimately up to you. It is important to keep in mind that the regulations for efficiency have changed in the past few years. So we recommend that you go with the 40 gallons, even if you had the 50-gallon before. Although, if you have a house that is full of kids showering after each other, the 50-gallon is going to give you longer-lasting hot water throughout the day.
