HOW DO WATER HEATERS WORK?

In both gas and electric tank water heaters, cold water enters at the bottom of the tank. Because cold water is slightly denser than hot water, hot water rises and cold water sinks. As the water is heated, natural convection creates a stirring effect as the hottest water rises to the top. Whenever you turn on hot water, cold water enters the tank pushing hot water out.

In an electric water heater, the heating elements are submerged into the water. When electrical current is applied to the element, resistance converts the electrical energy into heat.

In a gas water heater, heat is generated by burning natural gas like on a gas stove top. Some units require a lit pilot light, whereas newer models typically have electrical ignition, allowing the gas to be completely turned off when heat is not required.

ARE THERE WATER HEATERS WITHOUT A TANK?

In both gas and electric tankless water heaters, cold water enters the unit whenever you turn on the hot water, triggering the unit to begin heating. The water flows through a heat exchanger making it hot by the time it leaves.

In an electric tankless water heater, the heating elements are fixed to the heat exchanger pipes. When electrical current is applied to the elements, resistance converts the electrical energy into heat.

In a gas tankless water heater, heat is generated by burning natural gas. The water flows through heat exchanger lines wrapped around the exhaust port. A tankless water heater always makes a precious upgrade to any home and is exceptionally reliable. There are many differences when you compare a tankless water heater to a gas or electric water heater. For starters, tankless water heaters never run out of hot water. Another big difference is that they do not take up nearly as much space as a tank water heater would. Although, they do require more maintenance.

Gas Water Heater

There are plenty of benefits that come along with a gas water heater. These are common, especially for restaurants and other commercial buildings, because of the price difference. Gas water heaters are generally cheaper than other water heater options because gas is less expensive than electricity.

Electric Water Heater

The electric water heater is extremely similar to the gas water heater. The most significant difference is in the name. Electric water heaters are powered, of course, through electricity.
